Can ChatGPT book an appointment with my business?

AI answers asked October 19 to 21, 2026, through the versions these companies sell to programmers, not the phone apps. Page updated . By Known Around Town, which sells an AI check like the one these numbers come from.

Not in our test, and the versions we tested had no way to. We asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok to "find me a roofer in Tacoma WA and book an appointment for me," and the same for 13 other trades and towns, between October 19 and 21, 2026. None of the 56 answers booked anything. Claude, Gemini and Grok said so in all 14 of their answers. ChatGPT offered to help and asked the customer for their details.

What each assistant said, in its own words

From the Tacoma roofer answers, October 21, 2026:

  • Claude: "I can't book appointments for you because I don't have access to scheduling or booking tools."
  • Gemini: "I cannot directly access your personal calendar or make phone calls to schedule appointments on your behalf."
  • Grok: "I can't book appointments on your behalf as an AI, but I've highlighted companies with strong ratings, contact details, and options for quick quotes or online scheduling where available."
  • ChatGPT: "If you approve, I'll reach out to the chosen roofer(s) to book a free inspection or estimate and then report back with available times and quotes so you can pick the best option."

ChatGPT's offer needs a note. We asked through OpenAI's version for programmers, where the only tool it had was web search, so it had no way to make that call or send that form. Its University Place landscaper answer said so: "I can't place bookings directly myself, but I'll provide ready-to-send messages and gather the quickest available appointment times from the pros you choose."

What the customer was told to do instead

The assistants handed the job back to the customer: 52 of the 56 answers gave at least one phone number, and 39 mentioned an online form, a quote request or online scheduling. Gemini's Tacoma answer put it plainly: "Most of these sites have a 'Request a Quote' or 'Schedule an Estimate' button directly on the homepage."

So with the assistant versions we tested, a customer who asks to book still ends up on your phone line or your website. The assistant can only pass along what it can read there.

Our own product test

Some assistants now have agent modes that can open a web page and fill in a form. On October 21, 2026 we tested one: a Claude agent with a web browser, given what a customer would say plus the web address of the page to use.

  • On a test site built like many small trade sites, with phone numbers and no form, it stopped: "The site has no online way to book or request a service. It only lists phone numbers, and I can't call or text."
  • On a test booking page made with Known Around Town, for a made-up hair studio, it sent the booking request in about 19 seconds.

This was our own test of our own product, with made-up businesses. The agent was handed the page's address; whether an assistant finds a booking page on its own was not tested. It shows what one browsing agent did with two kinds of page on one day, and nothing about what ChatGPT's or Gemini's agents do.

What to do this week

  1. Put a short request form on your website: name, phone, address, what needs doing. A browsing agent can fill a form; it cannot make a phone call.
  2. Keep your phone number as text on every page, the same number everywhere. 52 of 56 answers passed a number along.
  3. When a request comes in by email, reply with two or three specific times. When we asked Claude on September 24, 2026 what it would need to book with a local business, it said "Email already works as a booking channel" when the business replies "with specific dates rather than 'give us a call.'"
  4. If you add a form, skip the puzzle or text-code check where you can. Claude listed "No CAPTCHA or SMS code on the booking step" among the things it needed.

Other questions owners ask

Will AI assistants book jobs someday?

Some already can use a web browser in agent modes. In our own test on October 21, 2026, a Claude agent with a browser, handed the page addresses, sent a booking request through a page with a form and gave up on a site that listed only phone numbers. That was one test of our own product with made-up businesses.

Does a phone number on my site still matter?

Yes. 52 of our 56 answers gave the customer a phone number to call. An assistant without a browser can only pass your number along.
