How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my roofing company?

AI answers asked October 19 to 21, 2026, through the versions these companies sell to programmers, not the phone apps. Page updated . By Known Around Town, which sells an AI check like the one these numbers come from.

We found no form to fill out and no listing to buy that puts a roofer inside ChatGPT's answer. When we asked ChatGPT to find a roofer in Tacoma on October 21, 2026, it searched the web and named three roofers, with links to one roofer's own website, a ratings directory and Angi. What it can read about you on the web is what it has to work with.

What each assistant said about Tacoma roofers

We typed the question a homeowner would: "find me a roofer in Tacoma WA and book an appointment for me." One answer from each assistant, October 21, 2026:

AssistantRoofers it recommended
ChatGPTDHT Construction & Roofing, Guardian Roofing, Diamond Roofing & Construction
ClaudeZR Roofing, ACME Roofing, Roofscapes NW, Tedrick's Roofing, Orca Roofing & Exteriors
GeminiValentine Roofing, Achten's Quality Roofing, Tacoma Roofing & Waterproofing
GrokDHT Construction & Roofing, Mears Roofing, William's Roofing

That is 13 different roofers from four assistants. Only DHT Construction & Roofing was recommended by two of them (ChatGPT and Grok). Claude also mentioned that Yelp's Tacoma list includes Mears Roofing; we count only the roofers an answer recommended itself.

Why ChatGPT picked the roofers it picked

ChatGPT gave a reason for each pick, and each reason pointed at a page it had read:

  • DHT Construction & Roofing: "clearly listing Tacoma service area and a local, family-owned operation. Source: DHT site."
  • Guardian Roofing: "strong local presence and good reviews (per listings like RatingsNearMe)."
  • Diamond Roofing & Construction: "top-rated option on Angi (4.9+ rating in Tacoma area)."

Two kinds of page did the work: the roofer's own site saying, in plain words, that it serves Tacoma, and ratings on directory sites. Claude's Tacoma answer leaned on the first kind: all five of its links went to the roofers' own websites, and its notes repeated what those sites said, such as "a licensed roofing contractor serving Tacoma homeowners throughout Pierce County."

Across seven South Sound towns

We asked the same question for roofers in Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Gig Harbor, Spanaway, Bonney Lake and Tumwater between October 19 and 21, 2026. The 28 answers named 71 different roofers. In no town did all four assistants agree on a single roofer.

Valentine Roofing came up most widely: Claude, Gemini or Grok named it in all seven towns. ChatGPT never named it. ChatGPT's seven answers held 23 roofer names in all, against 41 for Claude and 39 for Grok, so a roofer can come up again and again in three assistants and still be missing from the fourth.

What a roofer can check this week

None of these steps promises a spot on any list. Each one is tied to something an assistant or its maker said.

  1. Make sure ChatGPT's search can read your website. OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, called OAI-SearchBot, will not appear in ChatGPT search answers. You can send your web person this line: "Can you check that our robots.txt file doesn't block OAI-SearchBot? That's what lets ChatGPT search read our site."
  2. Say where you work and what you do, in words on your own site. "Clearly listing Tacoma service area" was the first reason ChatGPT gave. Name the towns you cover and the roofing work you take in the page text, not only in a picture or a map.
  3. Keep the directory profiles these answers used complete and matching. ChatGPT's Tacoma answer cited Angi and RatingsNearMe; across all our answers Grok linked Birdeye, Yelp, Angi and BuildZoom most. Use the same business name, phone number and towns on each one.
  4. If a shingle maker certifies you, keep that profile current. Claude and Grok each linked a roofing manufacturer's contractor finder (GAF or Owens Corning) in our answers.
  5. Keep your Washington contractor registration current, under the name customers know. Gemini's Tacoma answer told the homeowner to look the roofer up on the state's Verify a Contractor site.
  6. Ask the assistants yourself. Open ChatGPT on your phone and type what a customer would: "find me a roofer in [your town]." Then try Claude, Gemini and Grok, because they mostly disagree. See whether the assistants recommend the same contractors.

What we can't tell you

Nobody outside OpenAI knows exactly how ChatGPT picks roofers, and we don't either. We asked each assistant once per town, through the smaller versions these companies sell to programmers, so these are samples, and the phone apps your customers use can answer differently. How we got these numbers.

The free check asks all four assistants the customer's question for your trade and town at once and shows each answer.

Does ChatGPT give the same roofers every time?

Not reliably. Each answer is one sample. We asked once per town, so our numbers show what one answer said on one day, not how often a roofer comes up. Ask again and the list can change.

Why did Gemini name different roofers?

In our test Gemini answered through Google's developer API without searching the web, so it named roofers from what it already knew and typed their web addresses from memory. The Gemini app on a phone can search, so its answers can differ.
